Arrrr, with a little bit of brrrr

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

Kids of all ages showed up for a family-friendly pirate invasion Saturday. The skies were blue but the air had a definite chill.

Still, Christy Davidson and her sons enjoyed "some good clean fun" for the kids, as she put it.

"Let them get some beads and let them get outside where it's nice and beautiful for the day," she explained.

Her boys, like many, had one thing on their minds -- beads.

The sun kept parade-goers warm, but as the afternoon wore on, sunny spots got harder to find. But it did not dampen the spirit of the Gasparilla Extravaganza, better known as the kids' parade.

Business boomed for street vendors like Brandon Boyd, who sold parade-goers hats and swords to complete their pirate costumes.

"Been selling a lot of beads, bubble guns, and pirate items. Non-stop," he said.

As the parade filled Bayshore Boulevard, food service was non-stop.

"Past two years, business is booming," offered Ramon Hernandez of Pipos. "Everybody is eating, selling food, everyone is happy."

Hernandez said they've been preparing all week for one day.

"It's hours in the making. We don't just cook, we put love and passion into it."

Others traveled miles to join the pirate festivities.

"I'm here with my whole family and extended family and we're having a great day," said Helen Papa.

Papa came from Brooksville to join family from all over the state. For her grandson's 16th birthday, he had just one familiar wish.

"I want beads!" he exclaimed.

And he, like many, got his wish.
