Sliced fiber line causes Verizon outage

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

Verizon Wireless customers, left without cellular and data service because of a fiber line cut, appear to be coming back online.

Early this afternoon, viewers from North Port to Lakeland to the USF area began contacting FOX 13 to report problems involving both data and cellular service.

"Dead in the water right now. All our customers are laid out on our website. We use Verizon tablets to make our routes. We are at a standstill," one Facebook user complained.

"Kind of killing my business right now," a taxi service dispatcher complained via Twitter.

A construction crew sliced through a major fiber line between Tampa and Orlando, according to FOX 13 data provider Switch Communications.

By about 1:40 p.m., some users were reporting that service was back.  Others slowly started chiming in.

Verizon officials said they were checking on exactly how widespread the outage was.

Stay with FOX 13 for any updates.
