Suspect arrested in Clayton County rape

Posted: Updated:
CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. -

Police have arrested a man wanted in Clayton County on rape and other charges.

According to the Clayton County Police Department, James Arthur Ramsey III was apprehended in the Atlanta area on Tuesday by the US Marshals' Fugitive Unit.

Ramsey was wanted on rape, burglary, false imprisonment, aggravated assault, and robbery charges for an incident that occurred in Jonesboro on Jan. 12.

In that incident, a woman told investigators that a man entered a home on Sycamore Drive in around 2:40 a.m.

Authorities said Ramsey admitted to the crimes and wrote a letter of apology to the victim.

However, on Wednesday afternoon in a Clayton County courtroom, Ramsey shook his head and looked shocked as Judge Wanda Dallas read the details of what allegedly happened Sunday night.

Investigators believe Ramsey stalked the victim.  According to court documents, just before Ramsey allegedly raped the victim, she asked him if he had any sexually transmitted diseases. With Ramsey's head bowed in court, Dallas read his alleged answer.

"He said, 'No, I swear on my dead sister,'" read Dallas.

Court documents go on to allege that after the attack, Ramsey took the victim's 42-inch television and her cell phone. Her husband returned home and found the front living room window open.

Ramsey is being held without bond.
