`Breastmilk - The Movie` screens in Illinois

A new family film premiered in Chicago on Friday night.

It's a documentary called "Breastmilk – The Movie"

If the title makes anyone uneasy, that's exactly the movie's point.

The film examine's why breastfeeding incites fascination, controversy, and strong feelings, and it's quite a phenomenon.

It's as natural as anything in the world.

The benefits to babies, medical and in terms of brain-development, are well documented.

So much so that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends new babies be fed exclusively breast milk for the first 6 months.

Yet, the latest numbers from Centers for Disease Control are from 2010.

They show at six-months old 16-percent of U.S. babies were still exclusively breast-fed.

It is even lower in Illinois, where the number was 11 percent.

The numbers are much higher at three months.

Nationally, 37 percent of babies were still exclusively breast-feed at three-months-old.

In Illinois, 35 percent were still breast-feed at three-months.

There is evidence the push toward breastfeeding is working, however, as 77-percent of U.S. babies were breast-feed for at least some amount of time, and 49 percent of babies were still breastfeeding at least part of time when they were six months old.

The numbers in Illinois were nearly identical to these national numbers

The director of "Breastmilk" became interested in the topic after her first child was born and she discovered how hard, in many ways, breastfeeding is.
