Expert debate effects of Cytotec in Welden sentencing

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

At the center of a hearing in court Wednesday was one little pill, and whether it could cause a miscarriage.

And so began the battle of the experts.

Federal prosecutors called Dr. Daniel Buffington to the stand. He said when it comes to the drug Cytotec, no exposure is safe. He says it can cause an abortion by cutting off the blood supply to an embryo and causing severe contractions.

On Thursday, the judge may hear from the victim herself, Remee Lee.

It was March of 2013 when John Andrew Welden tricked his pregnant girlfriend into taking an abortion pill, telling her it was antibiotics.

She lost the baby a short time later.

She's expected to tell the judge all about it.

In September, Welden pleaded guilty to product tampering and mail fraud. But the judge put his sentencing on hold until he learns more about the effects of this one little pill.
