Stranded passengers seek refuge on Greyhound bus

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

For three nights, Greyhound buses in Atlanta have been motel rooms for stranded passengers.

Snowstorms across the country have forced Greyhound to cancel or delay hundreds of trips.

Travis Brown was supposed to be in Milwaukee by Tuesday. Instead he was still in Atlanta, sleeping on a bus for the third straight night.  He said the conditions on the bus are filthy and he doesn't feel safe.

"The doors are closed, but unlocked, so you have random people coming in off the streets," Brown said. "I don't feel like it's safe for us to be sleeping on the bus if there's no supervision."

Wanda McMorris has spent two nights on the bus; she says it's dark and cold.

"It was cold and we asked about the heat and they didn't say anything, and there's no lights -- you can't read, can't do anything," McMorris said.

The other option is to seek shelter inside the terminal, but the place is packed. To get a guaranteed place to sit, some men said a Greyhound representative told them they'd have to pay $5.

"I think us being customers, I shouldn't have to pay $5 to have a seat where I can be safe and be comfortable," Brown said.

Passengers said they're upset and they haven't been able to get answers from management.

"They can't control the conditions, they can't control the weather, but they can better accommodate their customers," Brown said.

Greyhound representatives told FOX 5 that the buses may not be as clean as they could be because people inside the terminal are busy taking care of passengers. They also said the buses are heated, but the cold weather is preventing it from being as warm as it could be. They're still looking into why the station would charge passengers $5 to get a guaranteed seat inside.
