Report: Lovie Smith will bring back Hardy Nickerson

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA (FOX 13) -

Lovie Smith has a welcome mat in front of One Buc Place to greet all former Buccaneers. Hardy Nickerson will be the first to dust off his feet with his old team. Nickerson has accepted Smith's invitation to become his linebacker coach again.

This is the second go ‘round for Nickerson, the player who began the Bucs turnaround in the 90s. After patrolling the middle of the field for seven seasons with the Bucs ('93-'99) and after two more stops in Jacksonville and Green Bay, Nickerson retired and became the Bears linebackers coach in 2007 under Lovie Smith.

He lasted just one season, resigning due to an illness in his family.

Nickerson has spent the last four years coaching high school in California until stepping down this past fall.

The Buc have yet to confirm his hiring.
