Gray skies and a brisk wind couldn't stop an annual tradition in Tarpon Springs this afternoon. Dozens of Greek Orthodox teens splashed into Spring Bayou in the annual Epiphany dive for the cross.
Just before 1 p.m., the boys jumped into the cool waters, clamoring for the cross and its promised year of good luck.
In some years, it has taken a few minutes for them to spot the cross in the murky water, but this year, it took only a few seconds for 18-year-old Peter Smith of Sarasota to emerge with the white cross.
The Epiphany dive commemorates John the Baptist baptizing Jesus Christ in the River Jordan. This was the 108th celebration in Tarpon Springs.
