SARASOTA (FOX 13) -

UPDATE: Sarasota PD says a suspect is in custody.

A SWAT team has been called out to a sex offense investigation in Sarasota, and police say some roads are closed.

Apparently a suspect is believed to have a weapon and officers are attempting to make contact with him, a spokeswoman said.

It's happening near East Avenue and 17th Street, and 17th is closed from Lime Avenue to North Washington Boulevard.

Police say an armed sexual battery happened around 3:50 a.m. this morning. The alleged victim is safe and is talking to police, but investigators are still trying to get to the suspect.

Several businesses and homes are in the area, but a spokeswoman said it remains unclear where the suspect is.
