Recovery could take months for a Pasco County Sheriff's Deputy hurt in a head-on collision Wednesday. The accident happened on State Road 54 near Loury Drive in Zephyrhills.
Authorities said a driver, now identified as Bertin Jaimes, crossed over the center lane and crashed head-on into Deputy Darren Hill's cruiser.
Jaimes took off running from the scene.
Deputy Hill did not walk away.
"He does not remember the accident," said Deputy Hill's mother Cathy Pollard at a Thursday press conference at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa. "Yesterday he was in a bit of a fog. He didn't remember some people coming and going. He said he appreciated the visitors because it kept his mind off of the pain."
It's a pain she as mom can't repair. Deputy Hill has had at least one surgery and another is expected in the weeks ahead.
"I can't control it," said Pollard, a registered nurse. " (Yesterday) I just touched his head and I'm talking to him...keep him away from the pain of the muscle spasms. When he came out of surgery he could reach out and hold my hand. You could see his eyes were relaxed. He was so much more comfortable."
Pollard said she anticipates her son will make a full recovery. He suffered two broken legs, a broken arm and bruises on his lungs.
"None of the breaks in that horrific crash broke the skin, which is a big, big blessing."
The crash also did not break her son's spirit, or his determination to return to duty.
"It is very comforting to see his humor and that it's not broken," said Pollard. "Darren from a young age has always set his goals. I have always admired him because he has always achieved his goals...It is what he wants, so he will get it."
Pollard had this to say to Jaimes, now arrested and charged:
"I am sorry for you sir. I'm sorry that you don't have more integrity, and that you don't have more compassion. May God have mercy on you. Of course we forgive. We cannot take away the consequences of what you have done. Darren will live with the consequences."
Jaimes is facing a felony charge for leaving the scene of a crash with serious injury. He is also charged with driving on an expired license and driving left of center.
Jaimes' wife Gladys Patricia Soto was arrested along with his brother and sister-in-law. The trio is accused of lying to law enforcement during the investigation.
