After getting into a fight with his wife, detectives say Bertin Jaimes got behind the wheel of a Ford F-150 and crashed into a Pasco deputy's cruiser head on.
It happened on State Road 54 near Loury Drive.
Pasco detectives say he didn't stop to help the injured deputy; instead, he ran.
He made it to his brother's house in Zephyrhills, and that's when Sheriff Chris Nocco says the family cover up began.
"The smiling, and the smirking. The one thing is there was a language barrier but they didn't realize our deputies speak Spanish also, so they were picking up things that were clear lies," Nocco said.
The lies got them all in trouble. Jaimes' wife Gladys Patricia Soto was arrested, along with his brother and sister-in-law.
The trio is now facing obstruction of justice charges.
"When someone commits a crime and you try to cover it up, you're going to jail too. So now we have the whole family who could be laughing at the Land O' Lakes detention facility because they thought they were going to get one over on the Pasco Sheriff's Office," Nocco said.
Deputy Darren Hill suffered two broken legs but is expected to make a full recovery. He apparently didn't remember any of it, and it's hard to believe anyone would survive such a violent crash.
"This is someone that we care about, and by an act of God that he's still alive right now, because everybody saw the photos of that accident," Nocco said.
