Kelly, Bloomberg preside over their final NYPD academy graduation

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

More than a thousand police academy graduates took the oath Friday to protect New York City with honor. It was also the final graduation ceremony for Mayor Mike Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. The ceremony was held at Madison Square Garden.

Bloomberg and Kelly are just days away from leaving office. The mayor took this opportunity to highlight his administration's success in bringing crime to record lows. Overall crime is down by 32 percent compared to 2001. Shootings are down by the same amount. The number of murders in that time have plunged nearly 50 percent.

The mayor also recognized Kelly and thanked him for his initiatives that made the city safer in the past 12 years.

Following the ceremony, Kelly said the administration was able to lower crime despite a struggling economy that cut manpower.

Since 9/11, a terror attack has not been successfully carried out against New York. Now these men and women will hit the streets helping to protect the city.

A 16-foot-long exotic snake reportedly slithering around New Jersey's largest lake is apparently a suburban legend. Or the snake just isn't hungry. The state has stopped looking for the reptile after scientists failed to find any evidence of it in Lake Hopatcong and traps baited with chicken were left untouched. Three unconfirmed sightings this month of a snake, perhaps an anaconda as long as 16 feet, raised concerns among visitors and swimmers.
