Clearwater Marine Aquarium has been given a prestigious award. In the Friday edition of the USA Today, the aquarium has been named the winner of the best Florida attraction.
It was selected by local experts and editors of 10best.com as one of 20 attractions across the state. The aquarium quickly grab the number one spot and never looked back.
The success of the movie "Dolphin Tale," released a couple of years ago, launched the aquarium into the limelight with worldwide recognition. Dolphin Tail was a number-one box office hit in theaters. The movie is based around the story of 'Winter' the dolphin's remarkable rescue and rehab at the aquarium.
Before the movie was released, about 150,000 people visited the aquarium a year.
In 2012, that number more than quadrupled to 750,000 people.
Aquarium employees say they've outgrown the current facility and they're hoping to move into downtown.
The idea is to keep the current facility as a marine hospital and the new building as a destination spot. The proposals are still in the works.
