NJ Family Home Destroyed In Fire, Firefighter Injured

Posted: Updated:

A Burlington County home goes up in flames on Christmas Day and it sends a volunteer firefighter to the hospital. The home is now unlivable. Cell phone video captured a family's worst nightmare on Christmas.

Flames swallowed this Tabernacle home just as many families woke up to celebrate.

Mark Preston lives down the road from the Bozarthtown Road home.

"It was sad. It was devastating," Preston said. "I came out to see where it was looked down the road and saw the house was engulfed in flames."

The fire broke out just before 9 am, dozens of area firefighters responded. One hurt his hand on the scene and was treated.

Some neighbors like Katalin Russek wanted to make sure the family who lives there were ok.

"I said well I have Barb's cell phone and I called and talked to bob. I just wanted to make sure they weren't in the house," Russek said. "It's horrible. It's a tragedy. Christmas is happy time for us and all I keep thinking about is their hardships now and how we can help them."

The family is too distraught to speak with us on camera tell me they were staying with relatives overnight.

A family's home once filled with Christmas cheer now covered in ashes.

"It's terrible. I hope the only thing they lost is the house and nothing else. Thank God everyone is safe so that's important. Especially today," Preston said.

A joyous day burned by tragedy.
