Valentine’s Day gets all the credit as the romantic holiday, but many people use Christmas to pop the big question of marriage.
One woman will never forget a big surprise she just got during Gaithersburg’s Winter Lights Festival with her boyfriend.
The couple you are about to meet have been together eight years now, so as you can probably imagine, it is hard for one of them to get something past the other.
But when it came to a marriage proposal: the soon-to-be groom decided to enlist the help of Gaithersburg’s biggest Christmas attraction to ask the biggest question of their lives.
Gaithersburg's Winter Lights Festival is a holiday tradition.
"I had everyone in on it and they were like that's the perfect spot,” said Andrew Montgomery.
And for as long as Andrew Montgomery and Katelyn Kerns have been "Andrew and Katelyn,” it has been a big part of their season.
"We started dating when I was a senior in high school,” Katelyn said.
Andrew did trust the fact that when he finally would ask Katelyn to marry him, it had to be a surprise.
"I had to think of something, something kind of special, something that we do every year,” Andrew said.
The plan? Send Katelyn a fake email that she had won a private tour of the Winter Lights Festival.
"It said that we got to go when it closed at nine [p.m.] and we'd be the only car going through the lights,” said Katelyn.
With the help of the staff, Andrew built his own "Will you marry me?" sign.
"I had to put the lights inside of it,” he said. “It took a lot of work.”
"They needed to be the last car through so they could stop and get out,” said Carolyn Crosby of the City of Gaithersburg.
So Monday night, with their families in tow, they headed down to the light festival.
That is when Andrew sprung his plan into action, and it was a moment Katelyn will never forget.
Andrew's mother tried to guide them into place.
"Andrew, I know what you should do. Get a picture with Katelyn like right in the middle,” she said.
He dropped to one knee. They lit up Andrew's sign. And you know what happens next.
"As soon as I got down on one knee, everything just fell perfectly into place,” said Andrew.
She said “yes” to the greatest Christmas present she ever got.
"I cannot wait to tell our future kids about this story,” Katelyn said.
It is a Christmas story that is 100 percent true -- and true love.
