Shoplifting arrest causes scare at Roosevelt Field Mall

Posted: Updated:

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (AP) -- Three shoppers were slightly injured at a Long Island mall after a suspected shoplifter knocked over a display case, police said.

The noise caused some to think gunshots had been fired, but police have said that no shots were fired. The incident happened at the Roosevelt Field Mall in Garden City on a busy Christmas Eve.

Nassau County Police Inspector Kenneth Lack said three people appeared to have been injured as shoppers attempted to flee the scene.

The incident at about 1:20 p.m. Tuesday caused the mall to be closed for about 15 minutes as a precaution.

Lack said the alleged shoplifter was being taken into custody by security personnel at Macy's when the display case fell.

A call to mall management seeking comment was not immediately returned.
