Strangers help answer prayers for one Detroit family in need this Christmas

(WJBK) -

Christmas was getting to be a challenge for one Detroit family. They have a two-year-old child on a ventilator, bed bugs and now the mother is in the hospital. But complete strangers have stepped up and are delivering a holiday miracle to this family.

It was a humbling moment Monday for the movers with Got Donations and Humble Designs in Detroit when they stepped foot into the Hoskins' home.

"When I walked in that house that first thing I did was look ... and I said, 'Where's the ornaments? Where's the presents?'" remembers Rob Rothenberg, a Got Donations mover.

What he saw was a bare tree and empty rooms in the new home of the Hoskins family. Their old house became too dangerous for two-year-old Shayla when a storm knocked out their power.

"[Shayla] was born with a condition called Hydrocephalus - you have too much fluid in your brain. She's been through a lot," says Shayla's nurse, Krystal Howard. She says Shayla was also born prematurely and doctors were not sure if she was going to survive. "These machines, they do work when the power is out but they only work for so many hours," explains Howard.

"It's kind of rough sometimes but our family always pulls through. We're kind of like a wolf pack. We never leave anybody behind," says Aubrie Hoskins.

12-year-old Aubrie and 13-year-old Andreya act very grown up, along with their four brothers and sisters, to help Shayla. They call her an inspiration.

After their mother called Fox 2, we talked to the folks at the DO Foundation who reached out to The Auction Block to team up with Got Donations and Humble Design to bring furniture to this empty home.

After realizing just how much the Hoskins need this Christmas the folks with Humble Design are getting ornaments, toys and even a new crib for Shayla.
