A police officer shot and seriously injured a stolen vehicle suspect this morning inside a St. Petersburg neighborhood.

Police say the man, identified as Quade Lavo Everett, is in life-threatening condition, and Fox 13's Mike Shingleton reports he underwent surgery today.

Police say he may be connected to several other vehicle thefts. How investigators found out about this one is quite unusual.

The suspect was apparently in a stolen Ford F-150. The owner called police to let them know that two of his vehicles had been stolen, and he knew exactly where the truck was.

The man used a GPS app on an iPad inside the car to track down the location. He told police he believes he left his door open and keys in the center console of the truck. The other vehicle that was stolen was a GMC Envoy.

When police got to the location of the GPS – near 20th Avenue South and 11th Street – they saw several vehicles parked outside a residence, including the truck and Envoy.

Several people were outside.

As officers approached in their marked vehicle, the suspects fled. Officer Brian Fernandez, 29, said Everett drove at him inside the F-150, so he opened fire.

A neighbor said they heard about six shots.

EMS rushed Everett from the scene, and now investigators are combing through a duplex at 2007 and 2011 11th Street South.

Police believe there are other stolen items inside the residence.
