Target customers are overwhelming the retailer's call centers with worries they may be among the 40 million credit and debit card accounts comprised in a nationwide security breach.
Customers told Fox 9 they were turned away from customer service desks at Target stores, and others have been unable to reach a representative by phone.
"We are experiencing significantly higher volume than normal to our call centers, causing delays," Target posted in a Facebook response. "We are working hard to resolve this issue by adding team member support and system capacity as quickly as possible. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate our guests' patience as we build capacity hour by hour until we meet all our guests' needs."
Target confirmed Thursday it has identified and solved a data breach that may have affected 40 million credit and debit card accounts used in stores between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15, 2013. Target.com was not affected.
The compromised data involves the type stored on the magnetic strip of cards that were used at stores: customer name, credit or debit card number, the card's expiration date and CVV (three-digit security code).
