Veterans, families get deeply discounted homes on Long Island

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The family of Marine veteran Shawn Hunkins squealed with delight and shed tears of joy when they got a tour of their new home on Long Island. Hunkins has done two deployments to Iraq. The Hunkins were one of six families selected for deeply discounted new construction built exclusively for returning veterans in Islandia.

Hunkins said they had been planning on moving to Missouri because they couldn't afford a home on Long Island.

The homes were built by Long Island Home Builders Care Development Corp., the charitable arm of the Long Island Builders Institute. The builders say the homes (most have three bedrooms and two bathroom) appraise for about $400,000. The veterans were able to purchase them for half of that.

These six families got quite a holiday present. But there were more than 100 applications for the homes. so the need is there for returning veterans seeking affordable housing.
