Central Texas deputy fatally shot serving warrant

Posted: Updated:

The Texas Rangers are taking the lead into the investigation surrounding the death of a deputy while serving a warrant.

Sgt. Adam Sowders was fatally shot Thursday morning. It happened at a mobile home along County Road 278 just before 6 a.m. Burleson County Sheriff Dale Stroud says there is limited information that his office is able to release at this point in the investigation.

"The team of officers took gunfire and a sergeant was injured," said Stroud.

Sowders died from his injuries. He was with seven other officers at the time serving the warrant. Stroud wouldn't get into details about the nature of the warrant the officers were serving.

Stroud says one person is in custody and no one else was injured during the shooting.

"Adam was well respected and extremely well liked and he is going to leave a big hole in what we do," said Stroud.

News of Sowders' death spread quickly around the small town of Somerville.

George Easley lives down the road from where the shooting happened. He says while he doesn't know the deputy killed but he's praying for his family and fellow officers.

"We're all going to be heart shaken at this happening to one of our own," said Easley.

Sowders friend Bud Brown sat through Thursday's press conference wanting to know what went wrong.

"I'm going to be here for this because I want to know what happened. I want answers," said Brown who called his friend a fine individual.

Sowders, 31, was recently promoted to Sergeant over investigations and joined the Burleson County Sheriff's Office in 2006.

He previously served with the Somerville Police Department. He has been with the Somerville Fire Department since he was 18. He did not have a wife or children but has many family members in the community.

"He was the kind of guy who stepped out in front if something was going on. He was out to make this county a better place to live," said Stroud.

The Burleson County District Attorney says her office is looking at possible capital murder charges. No information about the shooter has been released yet.
