Hillsborough adopts plan for stray cats

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA (FOX 13) -

Hillsborough County is trying a new plan to let stray cats live in the wild instead of staying in shelters.

County commissioners approved a plan that would let the Humane Society of Tampa Bay take stray cats from the county shelter, neuter them, and then release them back in the neighborhoods where they came from.

While supporters say it will cut down on euthanasia rates, veterinarians say the stray cats will continue to pose a public health risk.

The plan calls for 4,000 cats to be neutered and re-released into neighborhoods over the next two years.
