A United Way commercial featuring former Buc Derrick Brooks was voted the best one out of the last 40 years. That is like snagging the Oscar for commercials, because one of the longest running partnerships in sports has to be the United Way and the NFL.
It's a partnership that started back in 1973, and one of the reasons for not only the longevity but the success behind the 40-year deal is the creativity of those United Way commercials -- players, game officials, club executives, have all been a part of some humorous spots that drive home a serious message.
More than 800 have been featured over the last 40 years. And out of all those commercials, the best were narrowed down to 40. The only stipulation was that one player from all 32 teams had to make the finals.
Now remember, these 40 top commercials were pulled from the last 40 years, so Brooks was in against some of the biggest names in the league -- and his commercial won the national fan vote.
I bet you can remember the song he makes the kids sing on the bus before you even click to play. Derrick Brooks did this commercial back in 1999, and it still is just as good now as it was 14 years ago.
Take a look at it and maybe the kids need a new song: "What's our favorite United Way spot --- Mr. Derrick Brooks."
