Santa gets a little help from Pinellas deputies

ST. PETERSBURG (FOX 13) -

Santa's elves are wearing green and gold this week.

Armed with wish lists, nearly 100 Pinellas County deputies and agency members will shop for Santa, helping needy families.

They'll spend about $43,000.  Most of the items, deputies say, consist of basic needs like underwear, socks, a jacket or school clothes.

The money was collected from the 20th year anniversary of the "Ride & Run With the Stars" event.  Thanks to this program, more than 750 children and their families will receive assistance this year.

Bicycle requests will be filled by sponsor Bechtel Financial Services and will be delivered to families on a date soon to be announced.

The shopping spree began at 7 a.m. and continues until about 9:30.

Deputies and volunteers will be delivering many of the packages in person in the coming days.
