Old RV draws ire on Upper West Side

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The 1984 Chevy mobile home has a view of Riverside Park and sits in the heart of the Upper West Side. But the 23 foot long pad on wheels isn't getting a lot of love from the neighborhood.

It is Rabbi Steven Blumberg's RV.

"The design of this is so amazing that one really does have the sense of not being in a vehicle but a roomy studio apartment," Blumberg says.

Blumberg bought the rusted vehicle back in 2007 after losing an apartment in Riverdale. He got it for $8,000 on Ebay and toured the country for a religious trip before settling back in the city.

The life-coach says he lives in a rent-free in a student's apartment on 74th street and uses the trailer for fun. But he's been getting a lot of complaints for parking it on Riverside Drive.

"I've been shocked by people constantly getting in my place about how this shouldn't' be can't be won't be," Blumberg says.

Leaving a mobile home on the street for 24-hours is illegal, according to the Department of Transportation. Tickets can start at $115.

Blumberg says he hasn't had any trouble from the police, just his neighbors.

"It's middle class entitlement. One of the great things about this city is it's diversity," Blumberg says.

Blumberg says it is a space for him to write, play, and reflect. He says with all the flack he's been getting from his neighbors he has no intentions of getting ride of his pad on wheels.

Burger chain Five Guys is testing the adage that everything tastes better with bacon. It is rolling out a customizable milkshake program and along with bananas, peanut butter, Oreo cookies, salted caramel, you can chose bacon.  Yes that's right: a bacon milkshake.

Timothy Cardinal Dolan gathered religious and city leaders with the focus of how to ease tensions between police and the community in advance of this Saturday's march to protest the death of Eric Garner. Some of the leaders in this group are rarely photographed together, let alone seated at the same table. But they were brought together over concerns about possible protest violence by the cardinal, one of the most powerful figures in the city and who commands respect across the board.
