Quick diagnosis helps baby survive rare condition

Posted: Updated:

One of the happiest times for a young couple is the birth of a baby. But, when something goes wrong, joy can quickly turn to fear.

The Lowe family experienced the high and ultimate low during the birth of their daughter Addison. If it wasn't for doctors at All-Children's Hospital, their little girl wouldn't be alive today.

Addison is their little blessing, which is amazing when you consider what she's gone through in her short life.

"When she was born our doctor notified us that there was definitely an issue going on," Jason Lowe said as he was playing with Addison at a park near the couple's Lecanto, FL home.

Four days after she was born, Addison was diagnosed with a condition called Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia.

Her tiny body wasn't making a necessary protein to live normally.

"You are not able to hold onto water very well and thus you can into a situation were your blood pressure drops. It's difficult for the baby to thrive," explained Dr. Pallavi Iyer, who is Addison's doctor at All Children's Hospital.

Fortunately, he was able to diagnose Addison's problem quickly.

"With daily meds and wonderful doctors she's a very happy, healthy, normal girl," said a relieved Gretchen Lowe, who is Addison's mom.

Addison is expected to live a healthy, long life.

She's doing the normal things most toddlers do: learning new words, running, blowing kisses. You can bet her parents are loving every moment, and expecting great things from their little angel.
