Police say a 22-year-old pregnant woman was shot and killed in a Tampa home invasion.
Salatheia Smith died early Sunday morning at a home on North Brooks Street. Police are looking for a suspect.
"We know that the suspects were after something in the house, they definitely targeted the house and walked in through an opened door and a confrontation took place," said Police Spokesperson Laura McElroy.
At this point, it's still unclear what the suspects were looking for. After confronting the people in the house, Smith's boyfriend, Charles Duefrane, let his dog loose.
"The dog attacked one of the suspects, he fires and hits the dog and at that point drops the weapon and the boyfriend picks it up and shots one of the suspects and they fled from the scene," said McElroy.
That suspect, Anthony Robinson, a man with a long criminal record, was taken to the hospital and is listed in critical condition. The dog is expected to recover.
Neighbors are having a hard time coming to grips with the violence. "I'm scared and this neighborhood is getting crazy," says Gloria Bryant. "I need to put some burglar bars on my windows, I got them on my doors and I'm not opening my door for nobody after 8 o'clock at night."
Anthony Johnson agrees.
"It was wild back in the old days, but not like this," he said.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers and could be eligible for up to a $3,000 cash reward.
