High-tech work-out gear keeps you warmer with less layers

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

You don't have to wear lots of layers to stay warm in the winter.

Now there is technology that means lighter gear, for warmer workouts.

Gone are the days of bundling up before you leave the house.

Today's outdoor gear is lighter, warmer and easier to put on than traditional cold weather work out clothes.

Self magazine's Marissa Stephenson weighs in on the hot new designs.

“Going out in the winter is bad enough, you're already cold,” she said. “You don't really want to be out there, you can have thin really comfortable flattering clothes you'll be that much more likely to work out.”

Stephenson says her favorite piece is the Nike Aeroloft vest.

"It's very thin, like a quarter of an inch thick and it fits really well, and it can be worn over a base layer," she said.

Here's how it works: movement activates ventilation in the vest, allowing heat to escape the body through laser cut holes between the patches of down.

But Nike's not the only company cashing in on the trend...

Uniqlo has also released ‘Heat-tech,’ a line of warm weather workout gear, dresses and even corduroys.

Stephonson says you will notice that Heat-tech is smooth and light weight and when you wear it, it feels like a second skin.

Reebok is also jumping on the bandwagon with its zig tech jacket,

It's made from textured lightweight outer fibers woven through the body lining.

“You don't have to be in heavy, clunky clothes or down jackets and you're gonna feel better about yourself when you're out there running.” Stephonson says.

Health enthusiasts say running in these frigid temperatures wearing lighter gear lets you go much longer.
