Vanessa Amezquita and her family were grilling out in the front yard with a few friends Saturday evening, when two men wearing hoodies walked up and started waving guns.
"They just kept saying 'give us everything you got. Give us everything you got'. That's all I remember them saying. Just the noise," Amezquita says, recalling that she heard several ‘pops.'
Six of those bullets hit her friend Byron Orellana-Arce.
"I thought they had killed him. But when he fell, he said ‘they hit me! They hit me!' I ran up on the balcony, slowly grabbed him and I held him in my arms, talking to him," Juve Perez said.
Perez added that he could feel the bullets blowing past him, until one of them grazed his toe.
"I remained frozen. Stiff. Waiting for one of those bullets to hit me, but thank God none of them hit me," Perez said.
He says all he could think of was his wife and his seven children, the youngest, a 2-month-old baby.
"Yes, I walk with fear these days," Perez said.
"They didn't take nothing. Nothing. It was just a waste. I don't understand. Why would they do it? They didn't even get anything," Amezquita said.
Police say the violence didn't end there. Outside the extended stay America Hotel, the suspects robbed two more people, shooting and this time, killing one of them.
"To do that, they just don't have heart. I hope they do catch them and I hope they pay for what they did," Amezquita said.
According to Tampa police, the robberies on Amelia Avenue and at the hotel are related. And they're still looking for the suspects.
Detectives don't have much of a description to go on but say they were last seen in a silver, Ford F-150. They are considered armed and dangerous.
