Man killed by van after running out of gas on LIE

Posted: Updated:

HOLTSVILLE, N.Y. (AP) - Police on eastern Long Island say a man has been killed after running out of gas on the Long Island Expressway.

The accident happened shortly before 8 p.m. Tuesday. Suffolk County police say 24-year-old Ryan Marshall apparently ran out of gas between exits 62 and 63.

He was crossing the eastbound lanes when he was struck by a minivan driven by a county Social Services Department employee. She was not hurt.

Marshall was declared dead at the scene. He lived in Coram.

Police say Marshall may have been trying to cross the expressway to get to a Suffolk County Highway Patrol officer who was stopped on the center median.

No charges were immediately filed. The investigation is continuing.
