USF Bulls: from stepped on to success

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

The South Florida Bulls are tired of being stepped on. They had enough of that last season.

USF has responded to George Mason's distasteful tactic, after junior forward Anali Okoloji intentionally stepped on South Florida's Anthony Collins during the second half of the Patriots' loss Wednesday to the Bulls.

It's created quite a spark.

"That's what pretty much set everything off," said freshman forward Chris Perry. "Whenever they stepped on AC [Anthony Collins] that was like the spark plug. After that, we all gelled as a team. We've really been feeding off that energy for the last two games. It's made us all play better."

The Bulls have been on a run with back-to-back two-point victories, including season highlight upset win over Alabama.

"That's a quality win for our program," said Bulls Head Coach Stan Heath. The team that obviously has a lot of respect nationally. At the same time, I think it's one of those wins that if we do what we are supposed to do, and down the road we look at our resume, it will be a win that comes back to help us."

After the victories this past week, USF is getting that "Cinderella" feeling once again. Even though it is early in the season, what gives this team confidence is that this is Stan Heath's best recruiting class, ever.

"Oh, yeah I would agree," Heath said. "I think as a whole, we really hit some good spots. We feel we can build this team and can build some good consistency going forward."

The Bulls starting 5 now includes is a mix of young and old. Bartow's Chris Perry is the latest to crack the lineup. The former Bartow High standout earned the conference rookie of the week honor with back-to-back double-doubles.

"His percentages are great," said senior Victor Rudd. "His rebounding is great. He's been a great addition to the lineup."

Now USF readies for last year's NCAA Cinderella team Florida Gulf Coast, and they are out for more than bragging rights. They want take away the title as the new "Dunk City."

"Oh, we're 'Dunk-City' of course this year," said Perry with a smile. "We'll be 'Dunk-City'. Yeah, we've got that title."

USF is talking like this will be the year of the Bulls.
