Search for shoplifter in pond ends after sundown

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

Deputies spent several hours Tuesday searching a retention pond near University Mall for a shoplifting suspect.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office says security officers from the Burlington Coat Factory caught a suspected shoplifter in the parking lot and were taking her back inside when she escaped them and ran off.

The officers said they saw her go into a retention pond, but lost sight of her after that, and weren't sure whether she came out of the water.

The HCSO dive team came to the ground, and deputies in the HCSO helicopter searched from the air.

The view from SkyFOX showed several cruisers and emergency vehicles at the pond on the east side of the mall.

The suspect was never located.

The sheriff's office says if no other information develops overnight, they will search the pond again in the morning.

In the meantime, anyone who recognizes the suspect from surveillance images can call the sheriff's office at 247-8200, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-873-TIPS (8477).
