Clerk who typed up Top Secret D-Day Invasion plans dies

FAYETTEVILLE, Ga. -

The Atlanta area lost a warrior this week and her role in the biggest invasion in world history remained a mystery for decades.

Helen Denton of Fayetteville was a corporal and a clerk for General Dwight Eisenhower when she typed out the top secret battle plans for the D-Day Invasion.

FOX 5 News first spoke to Denton in 1994, when she revealed her historic role leading up to the Normandy Invasion.

Even her husband, a veteran, went to the grave not knowing her war secrets. Eisenhower trusted her with the words that would unleash the largest combined army in the history of the world and would change history with tremendous sacrifice.

This past week, at age 91, Helen Denton passed away.

She was honored many times over for her duty to her country and for keeping her secret for so long. President Obama gave her the Golden Merit Award in 2009.

After the war, she worked for Delta, volunteered for the Red Cross and was active in several veterans' organizations.

She was buried with full military honors Saturday, December 7th, 72 years to the day that started her war story.
