Deputies: Inmate tries to dig out of cell

Posted: Updated:

A man accused of killing his girlfriend and ex-girlfriend now faces additional charges of attempting to escape from jail.

Pinellas County Sheriff's Sgt. David DiSano says detention deputies found suspicious markings on the wall and window of Jamaal Jenkins' maximum security cell at the county jail on Nov. 28.

The Tampa Bay Times reports that a closer look revealed the 26-year-old was using pieces of air vents and a broken nail clipper to chip away at the wall. He even made a false wall to conceal his work.

Authorities say Jenkins didn't get far. The damage to the walls was minor.

He's accused in the January slayings of Destynee Nekole Burkes and Tieyannie Dewitte Hollis. He was arrested a month later in Louisiana. He remains in jail.
