Brooklyn, USA: Popular tourist destination

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

It's the home of the Brooklyn Bridge, Grimaldi's Pizza, and some of the city's most fabulous parks. Now experts say that Brooklyn is a top-10 travel destination on the rise.

"We got the boats, we got the park, we got the ice cream we got the hot dog stands, why not?" says Tony Bloomberg, a hot dog vendor. "Enjoy yourself."

Brooklyn pride was running thick at the Brooklyn Bridge Park where war vet Bloomberg served up dogs to his hungry customers, mostly tourists visiting Brooklyn for the first time.

"I've only been here 15 minutes," one tourist said. "But it seems like a nice friendly reasonable kind of place."

Now, Brooklyn is No. 8 on a top-10 list of destinations on the rise determined by TripAdvisor customers. TripAdvisor says one of the most popular destinations in the borough is the Brooklyn Bridge.

Marlene Black, who walked the bridge Friday, says she would move to BK in a heartbeat.

"I would live here if I didn't live in Kentucky," she says.

So what do Brooklyn locals think of all of the attention?

"It boosts our economy so yeah bring in the money," a local says.

And Bloomberg--a mayor in his own right--agrees.

"I welcome everybody, all walks of life," he says. "Come down enjoy yourself."

Some of the other destinations on the list were Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Anchorage, Alaska.

Nearly all 1,100 facilities providing services in the city's new universal pre-kindergarten program are ready to open on time after passing health and safety inspections. City officials said Friday they expect the eight remaining pre-K schools to remedy violations by Sept. 4's opening day. If they don't, affected children will be temporarily enrolled in other facilities.

Police say the two American flags swiped from the Brooklyn Bridge and replaced with faded white ones are back on U.S. soil. NYPD spokesman Sgt. Carlos Nieves said Friday that the flags are in the United States. He did not know their exact location. Two German artists claimed responsibility earlier this month for the July 22 stunt.
