Twin Polk County brothers -- one a paramedic and one a deputy -- have been arrested after one of them allegedly had a sexual relationship with a teenager.
According to detectives, Warren "Nick" Nichols had a month-long sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl. The sheriff's office says Nichols, 49, was a longtime friend of the family who began the relationship with the girl back in September.
The arrest affidavit indicates the girl told deputies she and Nichols had sex 30 different times, all while her mother was at work. Nichols told the girl he wanted to marry her and even took her shopping for engagement rings, detectives say.
Nichols denied the relationship when the victim's mother found out about it, and later on when he was confronted by investigators.
Nichols was charged with 30 counts of unlawful sex with certain minors. He also faces one count of battery for an altercation between him and the girl's mother that the sheriff's office did not detail.
That altercation also resulted in a child abuse charge for the mother after she allegedly pointed a gun at her daughter.
Detectives say Nichols' twin brother, Lt. William "Bill" Nichols, knew about the relationship. The 25-year PCSO veteran resigned after being charged with failing to report it.
Both men are from Lakeland.
