CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Unseasonably low temperatures are forecast to stick around the Chicago area through at least next week, possibly bringing snow and rain by the end of the weekend, meteorologists said.

Saturday is slated to be cold, meteorologists said, with temperatures topping out in the upper teens, and wind chills dropping as low as 15 degrees below zero overnight in some parts of the Chicago area.

Some lake-effect snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are possible in northern Cook County and Lake County from Saturday night to Sunday morning, meteorologists said. Areas south of Interstate 80 are only expected to get 1 to 1 1/2 inches of snow.

Rain could also come to the Chicago area Sunday, meteorologists said, with a 50 percent chance of precipitation throughout the afternoon and a 70 percent chance of measurable rain after midnight.

A separate snow system from the west could hit the area late Sunday and into the Monday morning commute, with accumulations of up to 3 inches possible in areas north of Interstate 88, meteorologists said.

Lakes and ponds are expected to freeze over in most parts of the area, as temperatures are expected to stay in the lower 20s at least through the end of next week, well below seasonal averages in the upper 30s.
