Obamacare Identity Theft Danger

Posted: Updated:
Trenton, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, over 23,000 Obamacare applicants came from New Jersey during the first month of the site’s launch. The US Census also estimates that nearly 1 million New Jerseyans are eligible for coverage through the Affordable Care Act. But now there is possibly a very real concern that those who use healthcare.gov may have reason to worry about, identity theft.

Chuck Grimmett is a security expert who discussed the reasons why he believes it is only a matter of time before healthcare.gov is hacked. “From the reports we can find, all of their security testing has just been skipped,” Grimmett said.

Grimmett explained that the most serious risks exist where information is stored – in databases. He believes security for those databases have not been rigorously checked. He compared it to a physical office that stores highly sensitive information, for example a social security office. Grimmett noted that a social security office has many measures put in place to keep the files of personal information they store safe and secure. Now, imagine no one monitoring those filing cabinets and leaving them open to the possibility of someone just walking out with filing cabinets full of personal information – that is the type of security threat he believes exists at healthcare.gov, just in digital form.

“Sites like Amazon.com and Ebay.com check the security of their databases every single day. They have a security team doing this constantly. But healthcare.gov where hundreds of thousands of Americans are supposed to put all of their private, healthcare information has not been tested as far as they’re telling the public,” Grimmett said.

Grimmett suggests that individuals take their own precautions by using a service like Lifelock or Experian to monitor their credit and better protect themselves from situations like identity theft.

StubHub, which is a website that provides services for buyers and sellers for tickets to sporting events, concerts, and other live entertainment events, has been hacked. StubHub is getting a lot of bad press, but the site is really the victim here. The hackers have hacked accounts from other sites, and then used that information to get into the StubHub accounts.
