Merry Christmas Vs. Happy Holidays

Posted: Updated:
Robbinsville, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

The politically correct holiday police are at it again. This time the town of Robbinsville, N.J. is at the center of the debate. The town has traditionally held a Christmas tree lighting celebration and a menorah lighting celebration, but not everyone was happy about it.

Apparently, this year, town officials faced some criticism over calling it a “Christmas tree”. They ended up changing the name and referred to it instead as a holiday tree lighting ceremony so as not to offend anyone.

But the town also held a menorah lighting ceremony that didn’t raise any criticism.

Robbinsville Mayor David Fried was outraged by the attack on Christmas and wrote an open letter stating his anger, using his authority to once again call the event a Christmas tree lighting ceremony.

“It has sort of faded from the holiday tree lighting, then this year it was going to become the tree lighting and I finally said okay enough is enough, we’re going to call it what it is, it’s a Christmas tree lighting. We have a menorah at the Christmas tree lighting, we don’t call that a candelabra, we call it a menorah. So I thought ya know what, it’s gonna be okay. We’re gonna call it a Christmas tree and we’re gonna go back to our roots and I think that’s one of the problems we’ve had in this country ya know. We keep sort of trying not to offend anyone and in doing so it really has sort of affected our culture and our history and this is the great melting pot and it made this country great and we have to embrace it,” Fried said.

Fried pointed out that Robbinsville has a history of celebrating various religious and ethnic events, so why not Christmas?

“Most people really support the idea that it’s gonna be okay to say things like it is, but I’ve certainly taken my shots today as well and you have to take the good with the bad,” he said.

Fried went on to discuss how schools are even putting Christmas on the back burner.

“If you look at the school calendars, including ours, there is no mention of Christmas. Every other holiday is mentioned but Christmas is the winter holiday or the winter break. So it’s completely devoid of everything Christmas. Rosh Hashanah’s there, every holiday that we have is there, Thanksgiving is noticed,” Fried points out.

Should New Jersey towns get into the mortgage business? Two long-time Irvington New Jersey residents, Mary Whetstone and Yves Louis, say that the mortgage crisis in town has gotten out of control and something has to be done. “Every block there’s one or two or three, foreclosures on it. And if it keeps on like this, every house is going to be foreclosed,” Whetstone said.

Carmageddon, the lord of all traffic nightmares was predicted yesterday morning due to the closure of the northbound Pulaski Skyway. What was supposed to historically be the worst Monday commute ever, thankfully turned out to be just the opposite. Now many motorists are wondering what all the fuss was about.
