An extra hour of sleep might sound good, but some local leaders say it's a bad idea for students and for school budgets.
Right now high school students in Pinellas County start school at 7:05. Students in Hillsborough and Pasco start at 7:30. One lawmaker wants to change that. Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fort Walton Beach has proposed a bill that would make it illegal to start school in Florida before 8 am.
Many superintendents say it's a bad idea because it would cost a lot of money to rearrange bus schedules. If there was a universal start time for all schools, it would require about three times as many buses and drivers.
Districts in other states made the switch after studies showed that students performed better with later starting times.
