Every day, thousands of airline passengers are losing money. They're giving a fortune to the TSA and they don't even know it.
After taking off shoes, belts, jewelry and depositing pocket change in plastic bins at security checkpoints, many forget to recover the loose change they dropped in the bins.
And last year, the TSA collected more than $500,000 in pocket change that passengers left behind.
The U.S. House just took action, by passing the TSA Loose Change Act (sponsored by Florida U.S. Rep. Jeff Miller). It directs that unclaimed money be spent on airport lounges designated for military personnel and their families. Those lounges are designed to give families some quality time together before they leave.
"TSA is currently authorized to keep the money for its own use. But the agency has been slow to spend it, and already receives $7 billion towards its operations every year," said Texas Congressman Michael McCaul.
The bill passed in the House by a voice vote. The Senate will consider it next.
