Analysis: Auburn makes case for shot at title

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

It's time to find out how much of a factor strength of schedule is when it comes to deciding who plays FSU in the national title game, provided all three teams -- FSU, Auburn and Ohio State -- win.

Right off the top, Auburn has the 26th-toughest schedule in the country, Ohio State's schedule is ranked 61st. Auburn's athletic director says it would be a "disservice" to college football if a one-loss SEC team didn't play for the national title. He has a point; Auburn had the tougher schedule, the softest team they had on their run to the SEC title game was 0-8 Arkansas.

Ohio State? Through no fault of their own -- the Big 10 is struggling right now -- OSU's wins come against teams like Illinois (1 and 7), Purdue (1 and 7), Northwestern (0 and 8), Michigan (3 and 5) and Indiana (3 and 5). Plus what hurts Ohio State in the minds of some is that Michigan, a 3-and-5 team, put 41 points on the Buckeye's defense in a game that came down to a two-point conversion attempt.

If you look at Ohio State's entire season going into the conference championship, the highest ranked team they will play is Michigan State, ranked 10th in the BCS.

Auburn's biggest schedule break was beating an 0-and-8 Arkansas team. Other losing-record teams they faced include UT (2 and 6), Miss State (3 and 5, although the Bulldogs were nationally ranked earlier this season), and Ole Miss (3 and 5).

Auburn lost to LSU at LSU, but right now the SEC has five teams in the top 25 of the BCS rankings, while the Big 10 has just three: Ohio State, Michigan State, and Wisconsin.

I like Urban Meyer's reaction when asked about what could be another BCS controversy and he answered, "I think America is ready for a playoff."
