The Polk County Sheriff's Office has identified two people killed when their motorcycle collided with a garbage truck.
The crash happened just before 3 p.m. off Lakeland Highlands Road on Saturday. Deputies say 36-year-old Yvette Marie Cox and her 48-year-old husband Michael Stanley Cox were traveling south when a garbage truck crossed in front of their motorcycle.
Witness Michelle Murphy heard the impact from her home nearby.
"My family and I were on the back porch. We were just hanging out and we heard a loud crash," said Murphy. "Within two to three minutes it was just siren after siren."
Authorities say the couple was leaving the Publix supermarket at Lake Miriam Plaza on South Florida Avenue when the accident happened.
Murphy described the scene in front of the Grove Glen East Subdvision.
"You could see they had just come from the grocery store. Their groceries were all over the ground," Murphy said of the victims.
Authorities say Mrs. Cox was found underneath the garbage truck. Her husband was located next to the motorcycle in the middle of the intersection.
Neither of the victims were wearing a helmet.
Investigators tell Fox 13 the garbage truck driver applied the emergency breaks and stopped several feet from the point of impact. He was not hurt.
The investigation is still ongoing.
"We have been praying for the family and the man driving the garbage truck also because he was very distraught" said Murphy."It just proves how quick life can be gone, you know."
