SMYRNA, Ga. -

Eight families were turned out into the cold following a early morning apartment fire on Thanksgiving Day in Smyrna.  In all, 32 people were affected, including one family who was visiting the area for the holiday.

Smyrna Deputy Fire Marshal Kerry McCoy says the fire broke out on the upper level of the three-story building at the Mission Galleria Apartments off Herodian Way in Smyrna around 3 a.m. They say a resident found the fire near his dryer. He was able to wake up his wife and get out safely with her.

Firefighters are crediting the fire alarm and alert residents who went door-to-door for getting all 27 residents out of the eight units.

Firefighters say the fire spread and eventually caused the top floor to collapse onto the second floor and then the first floor. They say the building will be uninhabitable.

The Atlanta Chapter of the Red Cross was called in to assist the displaced residents.

Christian Rosado, a freshman at Wheeler High School, and his mother fled just before the inferno erupted inside.  The 14-year-old told FOX 5 that of all the things he lost, he wished he could have salvaged his clarinet.  Now, he says he hopes those who hear his story will look at Thanksgiving from a different perspective.

Fire investigators are still trying to determine the exact cause of the fire.
