When you hear the name Zephyrhills, you probably think of one of two things: The bottled water company or skydiving.
But there's so much more to this community.
It's called the "City of Pure Water," and as home to the Zephyrhills water bottling plant, that makes a lot of sense. And, yes, if you want to jump out of a plane, this is the place to go.
But this quiet community up U.S. 301 and north of the Hillsborough River State Park is one that's rich in history.
You have to start all the way back in 1886.
Simon J. Temple came to Pasco County to purchase more than 200 acres. He established what was known as the Abbott Post Office.
In fact, Abbott was the town's original name. Not until later did it become known as Zephyrhills.
You can thank an old Civil War veteran for that.
Captain Harold B. Jeffries made his way down from Pennsylvania in 1910. He was vice president of a company.
Its name: The Zephyrhills Colony Company.
As the community grew, the name stuck. Schools, trains and businesses came, and the rest is history.
These days, it stays close to its original roots -- rural and quiet with an appreciation for community and tranquility.
And that's why it's one of Florida's Hidden Gems.
