A 2-year-old Lakeland boy is dead after a shooting in his family's driveway, Polk County deputies said Tuesday.
Investigators said the child followed his mother out to her husband's truck where she was looking for something. As she searched through the vehicle, she told investigators she moved a loaded gun from one spot to another.
Deputies said the mother told them she turned away and heard a gunshot, then saw her son fall to the ground.
The boy was rushed into surgery at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, but doctors couldn't save him.
Detectives have not classified the case as an accident, the investigation into what happened is still underway. Neither of the boy's parents have been charged.
Neighbors said they heard the bang and couldn't believe what happened.
"All I heard was the gunshot and the smell of the gun powder," said Orlando Coiradas, who lives a few houses away on Arthur Boulevard. "It was sad. A child that got struck with a bullet accidentally, you feel sorry for the family and everyone that's close to the family."
Barbara Griffin, the family's next door neighbor, said she would often see the child outside.
"He's just a sweet little boy. He was very smart and intelligent," she told Fox 13 News through tears. "They've got my deepest, deepest sympathy because it's a little baby, a two-year-old little baby and if I can help out in any way, I will because no one, no family deserves this."
