Personal seat licenses to help pay for new Falcons stadium

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

The Atlanta Falcons have said that the public's contributions towards the cost of the new stadium will only come from the city's hotel-motel tax, but that doesn't mean local fans won't be chipping in towards the $1.2 billion price tag.

Season ticket holders will be helping to fund the new retractable roof stadium through personal seat licenses.

About $200 million of the new stadium will be from public funds through the hotel-motel tax. The remaining costs will come from the Falcons, the NFL and through personal seat licenses.

Personal seat licenses are fees paid just for the right to purchase a season ticket holder.

When you look at the big picture, they're just simply another way to charge for tickets," said Bruce Seaman, an economics professor at Georgia State University.

The prices vary depending upon the team and location of the seat. Some Dallas Cowboys fans pay up to $150,000 for the PSL. Remember, that price is paid for the PSL itself and not the ticket. On the lower end of the scale, Chicago Bears fans pay about $1,700 for some PSLs.

Falcons fans can expect to pay between $2,000 and $10,000 for the PSLs, Seaman estimates.

The Falcons are expected to announce the actual fees in late 2014.
