ST. PETERSBURG (FOX 13) -

It's a call you hope you never get as a parent -- Your child has a life threatening condition. But quick thinking doctors at All Children's Hospital performed a real-life miracle.

Karissa Hodges remembers how it all started with a routine day that turned into a nightmare.

She was sitting at home when the phone rang.

"No shoes, no socks, ran out the door, ran down the street to him and literally just got to him in time," said Hodges.

Hodges ran three blocks to her son Jayden after she got the call he fainted on the school bus.

"Scary, devastating, shocking all at the same time," Hodges said.

An ambulance rushed him to All Children's Hospital.

"Jayden's condition was very serious," said Dr. Jamie Decker of All Children's Hospital. "He had a heart muscle disease which caused the heart not to be able to relax correctly."

Doctors did immediate surgery to implant a pacemaker.

Then, when he was about to head home, Jayden's heart stopped. The medical team quickly resuscitated him.

Jayden then went back in for more surgery. This time, doctors installed a defibrillator to regulate his heart beat.

"He was fortunate that we were able to figure this out," said Dr. Decker. "He's doing great right not."

"Honestly he likes to sit outside and soak up the sun," said Hodges. "He enjoys it."

Jayden is now home and enjoying life, thankful for the doctors at All Children's Hospital.

There are no medications to help this type of heart disease. Jayden is going to need a heart transplant in the future.
