Miller: Trading Fielder gives Tigers flexibility

Major news in baseball tonight as the Tigers have agreed to trade Prince Fielder to the Texas Rangers in exchange for Ian Kinsler.

The significant gain for the Tigers is getting out from under Fielder's contract which guarantees him $168 million over the next seven years.  Kinsler is guaranteed at least $62 million with a maximum of $69 million over the next five years.  Now, there are also cash considerations with Yahoo sports reporting that the Tigers will also pay Texas $30 million dollars to finish off the swap.

The trade means the Tigers could re-sign pitcher Max Scherzer who just won the Cy Young and is eligible to become a free agent after next season.  Miguel Cabrera is expected to move to first base.  Kinsler would take over at second and the team's top prospect Nick Castellanos would take over at third.  The team would then presumably be in the market for a left fielder.

All that is speculation.

There are other possibilities that could come about but certainly they gain a huge amount of flexibility by trading Fielder who fell out of favor as he struggled last year during the regular season and the playoffs.
