Two Pinellas County detention deputies are on the other side of a jail cell tonight.
One was arrested for roughing up an inmate, and the other is accused of covering it up.
The sheriff says Deputy Klaus Reinert, 40, got into an argument with the inmate. When it escalated, the deputy punched him in the face, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.
A second deputy, 44-year-old Mark Capanna, witnessed the whole thing, but neither deputy reported it, according to the sheriff's office.
The investigation began after several inmates told jail staff what they saw. When the deputies were asked what happened, they lied about it, PSCO says.
Both deputies resigned before the investigation was over.
They're now in the Pinellas County Jail. Reinert is charged with felony official misconduct and misdemeanor battery. Capanna is also charged with felony official misconduct.
